Trademark Workflows

Common tasks with Indian trademark data from IP India, step by step. Each step links to the endpoint that does it. See Getting Started for your API key and the Authorization header.

Clearance search before filing

Check whether a name is already taken in the classes you plan to file in.

1. Search the word mark in your classes with Search Indian Trademarks:

   Narrow it with statuses (e.g. Registered), states or tm_types, and add export=true&export_mode=PDF for a report.

2. Open a close match with Get Trademark Details for its goods and services, proprietor, status and dates.

3. Read its examination report or any filing with Download Trademark Document, using an id from the mark's documents.

To check a logo, send the image to the same search as a POST with query_type=IMAGE and the multipart field image_file.

Check the status of many marks

Send up to 500 application numbers in one call with Get Trademark Details in Bulk:

Each mark comes back with the same fields as Get Trademark Details, including status, alert, documents and oppositions.

Watch the Trade Marks Journal

IP India publishes the Trade Marks Journal every Monday. To find newly advertised marks that conflict with yours:

1. Get the latest journal numbers with List Trademark Journals.
2. Download the journal's Excel sheet of advertised marks with Download Trademark Journal.
3. Compare the advertised marks with your own, then open any close match with Get Trademark Details.

Track oppositions

• On one mark: Get Trademark Details lists the mark's oppositions in oppositions_data. Open one with Get Opposition Details for its status, decision, correspondence and documents.
• By party: Search Trademark Oppositions finds oppositions by opponent name, opponent code or attorney name, newest first.
• Documents: download notices and filings with Download Trademark Document.
